Back in October of 2009, we launched the open source version of our analytics database, InfiniDB™ Community Edition, with the solid belief that bringing together a community around an open source project is a better way to build software.  And throughout this process, we’ve been thankful for the support that we have received from the community, our Product Advisory Board and friends for they have all played a  large part in shaping today's launch of InfiniDB™ Enterprise Edition into a compelling analytics platform.

As we launch InfiniDB Enterprise Edition, we’ve done so in a manner where the distinctions between the two editions of InfiniDB are clear while working to make sure that both versions offer real value.  InfiniDB Community Edition will continue in its current form as a FOSS offering supported by the InfiniDB Community at http://infinidb.org while the Enterprise Edition will be a commercial offering that delivers a future-proof platform for analytics by adding scale-out, MPP capabilities, automated management and monitoring, and formal production support from the team here at Calpont.  Further, we spent countless hours debating the right model for us to come to market.  One theme remained through all of the discussions - it’s our mission to provide an analytics solution that allows small and large enterprises alike to make BI pervasive throughout their organizations.  The volume and growth of data underscores how critically important it is for competitive organizations to align their businesses to make the most of the value locked up in the data.

We implemented a licensing strategy that frees enterprises to use InfiniDB Enterprise Edition on a pay for desired performance basis as they grow, regardless of the amount of data they have, how many cores there are on a chip or how many CPUs there are in a server.  InfiniDB Enterprise Edition is licensed on a node-by-node basis.  Simply put, there is one license per instance of the InfiniDB Enterprise Edition software.  On top of that, we layered perhaps the most attractive price point in the analytics database industry - with prices starting at $11,995 per node.  We invite you to compare our price against any of the others using our TCO calculator as we believe that there is not a better deal out there.  If you take a look at our Sizing Guideline, you’ll quickly see that this easily translates to a starting price point of $6,000 per terabyte…or less.  If you can find a better price-performance solution out there, we suggest that you buy it.

Now in an effort to validate our thoughts (as any company does when they bring a new product to market) we spent a fair amount of time talking to industry analysts, users and industry experts.  Throughout that process we heard a consistent theme in their responses that the Community Edition has a compelling feature set, the distinction between Community Edition and Enterprise Edition is clear, and the pricing for Enterprise Edition is extremely attractive.  Matt Aslett of The 451 Group echoed back that “Calpont’s InfiniDB product and licensing strategy appears to strike a good balance between the open source Community Edition, which enables scale-up without formal support, and the Enterprise version which enables users to both scale-up and scale-out over time with growing data volumes. The columnar-based, MPP architecture provides a new data warehouse alternative for current MySQL customers and those new to the technology.  We also see wisdom in Calpont's strategy of targeting large enterprise data warehouse users looking for alternatives for their data marts.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Matt.
