Calpont Offers InfiniDB-Hadoop Data Connector

New Bi-Directional Connector Allows Organizations to Transfer Data Between Calpont’s Popular Analytic Database InfiniDB™ and Hadoop™ Clusters

Frisco, TX and San Jose, CA – August 24, 2011 – Calpont Corporation, a leading provider of high-performance analytic databases today announced at the NoSQL Now! Conference a data connector between InfiniDB™ and Hadoop™.  The new connector is bi-directional so that organizations can determine where they want to do the analysis of data – providing the most flexible style solution.  The connector is built with the Apache Software Foundation open source Hadoop that ensures compatibility with current and future releases of Hadoop.

“While Hadoop might be great for collecting and storing large amounts of unstructured data, that doesn’t necessarily mean an organization is ready for query intensive applications; those in which query performance time against large dimensional or non-dimensional data sets is crucial to business execution,” said Jim Tommaney, chief technology officer at Calpont.  “Calpont is excited to offer a bi-directional connector for InfiniDB customers to enable greater value by eliminating the need to custom code Hadoop for high performance analytics.  InfiniDB’s columnar architecture is optimized for rapid and easy access to highly dimensional data and has the flexibility, scale and horsepower to work with massive data sets.  Combined with the InfiniDB-Hadoop Data Connector, organizations have a simple and efficient way to complement the strengths of each data source and leverage an organization’s existing analytic tools and solutions.”

More organizations are using Hadoop for large scale structured and unstructured data.  However, the sheer volume of data collected often results in a Hadoop implementation that is no longer performing at the desired speed for analysis. Unlike parallel, column-oriented databases such as InfiniDB, many Hadoop implementations don’t distribute query processing and have to write intermediate query results to local data structures as part of the query execution process that can result in bottlenecks.  In addition to slowing query response, this results in a mishmash of custom-coded infrastructure that can limit future technology scaling to support growing business requirements.

The InfiniDB architecture is optimized to do faster queries and scale as processing demands grow.  InfiniDB is built for Big Data demands, with a massively parallel processing (MPP), column-oriented architecture that is designed specifically for read intensive analytic applications and data warehouses that consume large amounts data. InfiniDB scales performance linearly with hardware, is easy to deploy and maintain, and requires no special database tuning, indexing or materialized views, making it ideally suited for Big Data analytics.

The InfiniDB-Hadoop Data Connector will be made available to InfiniDB users at no cost on www.calpont.com and www.InfiniDB.org in September 2011.
